The Designer: Bibhu Mohapatra
The Venue: The Box at Lincoln Center.
The Crowd: Prabal Gurung, Hamish Bowles, Virginia Smith, Lauren Ezersky, Robert Verdi, Fern Mallis, Emma Snowdon-Jones, Style.com and WWD.
The Collection: Taking his inspiration from The Crucible and the idea of good versus evil, Mohapatra—winner of the 2011 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award—used leather stamped with rivets (meant to recall "coffin nails"), fashioned pink goat fur into a shaggy-chic coat, and accessorized most of the looks with a single crows' feather glove. Crows' feathers also festooned the bodice of a cocktail frock and were worn as chokers with several of the evening dresses.
The Standout Piece(s): Stamped leather coats patchworked with fur, elegant black wrap-front trouser, an ingenious evening gown whose sparkly graphite foundation was encased on one side by a short-sleeved plain black shell, and black-and-mesh tops that offer a really fresh, grown-up take on the classic striped tee.
