The Designer: Gemma by Gemma
The Venue: Gemma Kahng's Garment District studio, where mannequins wore the designer's signature line, and two girls in Kabuki makeup modeled her new contemporary line, Gemma by Gemma, which debuted this season.
The Crowd: The CFDA's Lisa Smilor, Lauren Ezersky and others curious to witness Kahng's re-emergence on the New York Fashion Week scene after a three-year absence.
The Collection: Kahng's higher-priced signature line hewed to a more sophisticated, old-world aesthetic, with fur-collared black coats, strapless chiffon evening gowns and beautifully tailored blazers. Gemma by Gemma, on the other hand, was inspired by Japanese theater and all about color and f-u-n, as seen in a red bow-front strapless dress, pouf-skirted minis and Crayola-bright party frocks.
The Standout Piece(s): A peacock feather collar and a long, asymmetrical red chiffon skirt.
