What inspired you for fall 2012?
Persian rugs, Diana Vreeland's iconic interiors, Angela Chase, Palais de Tokyo, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Jason Brinkerhoff's women, Ponyboy, Versailles gilt, Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie, texture.
How does this play out in terms of colors, materials and shapes?
For the leather items I was really into creating texture within a monochromatic palette so you will see a lot of tonal mixing of smooth leathers, suede, textured fabrics and fur in jewel tones like ruby and emerald with some warmer neutrals (think: sable and nude). For the ready-to-wear collection we introduced a couple of custom prints (one inspired be a beautiful antique rug) and used subtle leather and lace accents to keep it all together. I really wanted to experiment with this idea of mixing materials like luxe tapestry fabrics and brocades with tougher leathers and wools.
What music did you listen to while designing this collection?
We have been designing for months now so it's always a variety of tunes old (Otis Redding and Neil Young) and new. For new music I have been loving Guards, Alabama Shakes and The Weeknd.
What do you look for when casting your show?
I look for girls with big personalities because I like it when the girls can bring a bit of themselves into the project. This season we are specifically looking for girls who have a wild side and can sing, dance or play an instrument. I recently did a shoot with Ashley Smith and she was awesome to work with because she is so down to have fun and act a little goofy—and you can see that reflected in the final images.
How do you stay energized/balanced in the weeks leading up to NYFW?
I am not sure I have the answer for this. But I try to get the gym a couple times a week, take Sundays off and do lots of deep breathing.
What other show(s) are you looking forward to seeing this season?
Proenza, Pamela Love, Givenchy.
How do you plan to unwind after Fashion Week?
I am planning to head out to the West Coast for a couple of weeks to get warm and stop thinking about hemlines and sweater details for a minute.
Veda designer Lyndsey Butler will present her fall 2012 collection on Wednesday, February 8th at The Hole gallery.
