What inspired you for fall 2012?
Landscape architecture—Fall/Winter is about urban environments meeting nature combined with the minimalism of the 1950s and '60s.
How does this play out in terms of colors, materials and shapes?
The color palette contrasts between dark tones of granite, slate and soil with pops of bright pinks and purples. Prominent colors of warm and cool shades of green and berry with brushed coppers, inspired by architectural details—linear lines, structured seaming, petal sleeves, minimalist knife pleats, all structured for a classic effortless feel.
What music did you listen to while designing this collection?
I love listening to Gary Clark Jr., Jay-Z and musical compositions from John Williams.
What do you look for when casting your show?
I always want my collection to bring to life the woman I imagine when designing. When picking models, I try to pick those who will exude confidence, intelligence and beauty. Above all, when they wear my designs, they must feel comfortable, empowered cool and confident. I want them to derive strength.
How do you stay energized/balanced in the weeks leading up to NYFW?
Coffee, good friends and the fact that I’m working on what I truly love.
What other show(s) are you looking forward to seeing this season?
Being a true fashion girl I absolutely appreciate the hard work and dedication that it takes to run a show smoothly, so with that said, I look forward to seeing what all of my friends are working on like Marchesa, Sophie Theallet, Vera Wang, Thakoo, and Richard Chai. I truly love my NYC fashion community.
How do you plan to unwind after Fashion Week?
Take a breath, thank my staff and then off for some r&r. First I sleep and then I have a proper meal since I’ll have been living off coffee and sugar for the past two weeks preparing for the show. I’ll spend some quality time with my daughters and then it’s right back into designing the next collection!
Rachel Roy will present her fall 2012 collection on Monday, February 13th at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.
