The Label: Sunhee | NY
Based In: New York
Designed By: Sunhee Hwang (not to be confused with the artist of the same name), who worked at Geoffrey Beene (with Alber Elbaz), Anna Sui and Elie Tahari before striking out on her own, first in 2001 and then—after a stint as senior designer at Anne Klein and VP of design at Jones New York—relaunching her namesake collection in 2011. "I wanted to design a line for the modern woman who seeks a look that is sophisticated and vivacious," the South Korean-born FIT grad—and 2012 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winner—told The Fashion Informer's Lauren David Peden of her dream customer. "The ideal Sunhee woman is modern, loves fashion and enjoys beautiful feminine design. My customer is the woman who’s going out—on a date or to a gallery opening—and wants something great to wear that's feminine but not fussy. She has a bit of an urban sensibility no matter where she lives and wants to be sexy and sophisticated in a clean, modern way without that cold starkness of pure minimalism."
Looks Like: For summer, Sunhee | NY is all about bold color, flirty frocks and sweet shorts. The fall collection, inspired by Dorte Jelstrup's artwork—specifically the video, (You Are So Distant) It Would Have Been Wonderful To Dance With You—is darker and a bit more edgy. "[The video] garners a deep feeling of desire and yearning between light and space," says Hwang of her inspiration. "Unlike my spring collection, fall consists primarily of structured pieces using knits with incorporations of washed silk, wool and stretch suede leather, all trying to capture the feeling of the Bauhaus and Constructivism in a more neutral color palette that ranges from ivory and grey to taupe and camel." In addition to sensuous wrapped jersey tops, one-shoulder dresses, sexy leather jackets and suede pants, expect lots of textured, begging-to-be-touched sweaters, as well. "My dream is to create beautiful designs that people can appreciate and enjoy," adds the designer. Mission accomplished, Ms. Hwang!
